A&P donates charity cash for Christmas

16/12/2011

It’s safety first at A&P Falmouth – which has resulted in a £1,000 donation to Mencap this Christmas.

The shipyard donated £1 for each “near miss” reported to the health and safety department in 2011, which was rounded up by A&P to £1,000.

It was the second year the exercise has run and was set up to encourage staff to report “near misses” – something that has the potential to cause harm from simple trip hazards to changes in the company’s Safe Systems of Work Procedures. The objective is that by identifying and analysing near misses then future accidents and injuries will be prevented.  Last year, £750 was donated to Cornwall Air Ambulance.

On Friday (16th December) clients and staff from Mencap’s FalCare Day Services Centre visited the docks to accept the money, which will go towards creating a new sensory garden and garden furniture.

Rebecca Cox, Team Leader of Community Services for Mencap, said: “We’d all like to say a very big thank you to everyone at A&P for their generosity. It’s a fantastic sum of money and will go a long way to helping us reach our target for the sensory garden.”

Gregg Renfree, Health, Safety, Quality and Security Manager at A&P Falmouth, said: “Safety is our number one priority here in the dockyard, and we hope this innovative way of encouraging staff to report near misses will continue to improve the excellent safety culture in the yard and further reduce the number of accidents reported.”
