A decontamination and sterilisation unit at Yeovil District Hospital which was designed by ADG Healthcare has been awarded an ‘excellent’ rating by the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method, or BREEAM.
BREEAM is the most commonly used environmental assessment method for buildings, and sets the standard in sustainable design.
ADG designed the £3.1m sterilisation unit with specialist contractor cfes Ltd and created 15 modular off-site units that were craned into position on top of Yeovil District Hospital’s accident and emergency department. The project was completed last September.
Phil Burgess, who heads up ADG Healthcare and is a Fellow of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management said: “We’re delighted that our Yeovil scheme has achieved an excellent rating and it highlights how good design can reduce long-term running costs by making buildings more environmentally efficient.”
ADG Healthcare is involved in a number of projects across the South West. The practice has designed the new £8 million dental education facility nearing completion at Tamar Science Park in Plymouth for the Peninsula Dental School, and a £1.5m primary healthcare centre for the North Somerset Primary Care Trust in Weston-super-Mare that has just started on site.
ADG is also working with Kier Western on a £3.5 million sterilisation unit in Bournemouth for the local NHS Trust. It follows a series of similar projects completed by ADG on behalf of Nuffield Health across the UK.
ADG is one of the few architectural practices in the region to have a BREEAM Accredited Professional on its staff, which means it can provide expert advice on built environment sustainability, environmental design and environmental assessment to clients and external design teams.
Using a BREEAM Accredited Professional increases the chances of a project achieving a high BREEAM rating when assessed.
