ADG wins £3 million Duchy Hospital contract

10/11/2011

The Architects Design Group (ADG) has been appointed to design a £3 million extension to Duchy Hospital, Cornwall’s only private hospital.

The project will see ADG’s specialist healthcare team design a new operating theatre, cardiac catheterisation laboratory, recovery suite, day case unit, outpatient extension, conference room, dining room, kitchen and secretarial space at the hospital, which is located at Treliske in Truro.

ADG was appointed following a tender process by Ramsay Health Care UK, one of the leading providers of private hospital services in the UK.

The major investment will significantly enhance the hospital’s facilities and meet growing demand for its services, including the treatment of patients referred by the NHS.

Tim Pearl, Development Director at Ramsay Health Care UK, said: “Duchy Hospital provides a large range of medical treatments but we need to expand our facilities in order to meet growing demand. The main development is a third operating theatre, catheterisation laboratory and day case unit, and we are taking the opportunity to re-organise other parts of the hospital at the same time to further enhance facilities for patients and staff.

“ADG has an excellent track record in the healthcare sector and their experience in working around operational requirements of hospitals while construction is carried out will be crucial to the job.”

ADG director Phil Burgess, who heads up ADG’s healthcare team and is a Fellow of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management, said: “ADG’s appointment by Ramsay builds on our public and private healthcare work across the UK and we’re delighted to be working on such a prestigious project.

“We are designing the scheme to minimise the impact on the daily running of the hospital, including some innovative construction methods.”

The work, which is expected to be completed in August next year, will include some off-site modular construction which ADG has used on previous health projects. This includes a sterilisation unit at Yeovil District Hospital which was craned into position on top of the accident and emergency unit last year.

ADG has also designed a number of healthcare projects across the South West including the new £8 million Dental Education Facility at Tamar Science Park in Plymouth for the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, and a £1.5m primary healthcare centre for the North Somerset Primary Care Trust in Weston-super-Mare.

ADG has also designed a £3.5 million sterilisation unit in Bournemouth for the local NHS Trust and are currently being considered for work at Guys and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust in London.

The structural engineer on the Duchy Hospital project is Michael J Dew Associates and the mechanical and electrical consultant is URS-Scott Wilson.
