Business leaders, prospective occupiers and agents gathered for a launch event at the impressive new Cargo building, in Millbay Road, where 1,700 sq m (18,300 sq ft) of commercial space has been created as part of a mixed use development including 134 homes.
Occupying the ground and mezzanine floors of Cargo and offering flexible space over a maximum of 14 units, the commercial space to buy or let is aimed at office occupiers, professional firms and a range of potential uses, from maritime-related businesses to research and development. There has already been a high level of interest in the new development, including off-plan sales and lettings, and fewer than half the units remain available.
Ifan Rhys-Jones, Associate with agents King Sturge, said: “Cargo is exactly the sort of waterside commercial property development which businesses in Plymouth want to see and that has been born out by the strong interest off plan and continued high levels of enquiries from a range of potential occupiers.
“It is also an impressive first development for Millbay which has been clearly earmarked as important focal point for future economic activity in Plymouth.”
The regeneration of Millbay into a new coastal quarter for Plymouth is the most significant regeneration project in the city, the largest in the South West and one of the biggest in the in the UK.
In addition to 1,200 homes, a total 21,000 sq m of business space and 17,700 sq m of retail and leisure floor space will be developed at Millbay by lead developer English Cities Fund (ECf), a partnership of Muse Developments, Legal and General and the Homes and Communities agency (HCA).
With Cargo now complete, major infrastructure works to pave the way for the next phase of development at Millbay are to take place following the announcement of a £4.5 million investment by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).
