Continuing concern as thieves target live cables

14/11/2011

Reckless thieves have again been risking serious injury or death by stealing or attempting to take live electrical equipment from Imerys Minerals’ sites in Cornwall.

In July of this year Imerys reported that the stay wires of a terminal pole on Hensbarrow Downs, near Roche, had been cut with the aim of dropping the 11,000 volt overhead power lines and poles to allow removal of the cable.

Over the last two weeks thieves have again targeted Imerys’ overhead power lines in the Whitemoor, Nanpean and Greensplat areas. These power lines carry up to 11,000 volts of electricity.

A company spokesman said: “We cannot stress strongly enough how dangerous tampering with, or damaging overhead power lines can be, not only to the thieves themselves, but also potentially to Imerys’ workforce and the general public.”

Imerys is working closely with the police on these incidents and would like to encourage anyone with any information in relation to these crimes to contact the police on 08452777444 or contact crime stoppers on 0800 555 111.
