Scillonian passengers raise £1,115 for Children’s Hospice South West

27/10/2011

Passengers travelling to and from the Isles of Scilly on the Scillonian III this summer have raised a fantastic £1,115 for Children’s Hospice South West.

Since the summer sailing season started in May, fortnightly collections have been made on the quay at Penzance.

The collections have been organised by Marcia Still, Purser on the Scillonian III, who provides passengers with information about Children’s Hospice South West and the Precious Lives Appeal as they prepare to disembark from the ship.

Marcia said: “Every year we support a local charity by holding the fortnightly collections on the Scillonian III, and I am really pleased by how much we have raised for Children’s Hospice South West this year and by the generosity of our passengers.”

A series of events have been organised by George Tideman on the Islands in aid of the Precious Lives Appeal over the past year which the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group are supporters of, including the Scilly Ten run which attracted more than one hundred runners and raised £2,626 for the charity.

In total monies raised this year on the islands adds up to a fantastic £10,000 which was presented to Mary Murfin, Community Fundraiser for Cornwall & Isles of Scilly, at the annual dinner held at the Atlantic Hotel in Scilly on Friday (21st October 2011).

The Scilly Ten Charity Run is sponsored by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company and is due to take place again in 2012 on April 8.

Jackie Hayman, Marketing Manager for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company said: “The Steamship Company is proud to be supporters of CHSW and able sponsor the Scilly Ten Charity Run.  Supporting local charities is very important to us and Children’s Hospice South West provides an invaluable service to children with life limiting illnesses, it will be fantastic to see the result of all the fundraising when the new hospice in St Austell is open.”

The Children’s Hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal, to build a new hospice to support the families of Plymouth and Cornwall, was launched at the beginning of September 2007 and on 5th September 2011 the announcement was made that the appeal target of £5 million had been reached.

Little Harbour in St Austell is due to open its doors in December and will offer a range of services such as 24 hour palliative care and end of life care, support for parents and siblings, as well as help, advice and support in bereavement and beyond.

Wendy Leach from Children’s Hospice South West said: "On behalf of CHSW I would like to thank all the management, staff and customers for all their support of the Precious Lives Appeal over the past four years. Little Harbour is now finished and in the process of being furnished, it is wonderful to have brought such a much needed facility to Cornwall but without the help of local businesses such as the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company's support and the support of their customers we would have been unable to do this. Thank you on behalf of all the families that will use Little Harbour and helping to make the most of short and precious lives."
