Major investment for landmark hotel

14/01/2011

The Land’s End Hotel, set in one of the most breathtaking locations imaginable, has closed for three months for a major refurbishment.

Land’s End is investing more than £250,000 to give the three-star hotel a new lease of life, with renovations to the restaurant, lounge bar and reception area.

This work is the first phase of a total overhaul for the hotel, with upgrades to the bedrooms and bathrooms currently planned for next winter.

David Bryans, General Manager at Land’s End, said: “The hotel has all the key ingredients to make it one of the most outstanding in the South West.

“Set atop the granite cliffs with million pound views towards the Atlantic Ocean and the Isles of Scilly beyond, the hotel offers one of the best sunsets in the world. We are now keen to rebuild the hotel and its ailing reputation.”

The ground floor restaurant, lounge bar and reception area will be given a sleek new look, bringing it up-to-date with a light, airy and modern feel, extending the seating capacity to more than 200.

The contemporary makeover has been designed by award-winning Absolute, the company which has worked on the St Moritz Hotel, The Hotel at Watergate Bay, Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall and Mannings.

Land’s End is currently recruiting a new management team - including a head chef, hotel manager and restaurant manager – who will be committed to ensuring everything is of the highest standard.

Since the mid 1800s a hotel has stood on the site, and has had a somewhat chequered past. A Luftwaffe bomb hit the hotel in 1941, and American soldiers were stationed there prior to the D-Day Landings.

But after this exciting time in the hotel’s history, the site of Land’s End fell very much into neglect for many years. Several buildings have been added over the last 30 years, though most recently they have struggled with an aging restaurant and hotel.

“We have aspirations for the hotel to be one of the top places to eat in West Cornwall, with outstanding food at affordable prices,” said David Bryans.

“The restaurant will offer an exciting new menu using the best in fresh local produce and will be open all day to non-residents for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, as well as evening meals.

“We are all very excited to be starting the New Year with this major investment. This is the time for the Land’s End Hotel to shine again.”
