The historic Dartmoor hotel was bought by the Davies’ in late 2010, and underwent significant refurbishments and updates before their first guests were welcomed in February 2011.
To mark the first year of the hotel’s new ownership, a second phase of upgrades has been undertaken, including a continuation of improvements to the 15 individually furnished bedrooms and bathrooms which began last year (see images attached).
The winter upgrades to the former 15th century flour mill also include a refurbishment of the fine dining restaurant and installation of a new free access internet station in the lounge, as well as new driveways to improve access and appearance of the hotel’s exterior.
Sue Davies said: “Mill End is a much loved hotel, with a unique character, so all the improvements we have made have been done in a gradual and sympathetic way. Our aim is to modernise and freshen up the appearance of the hotel, but keep the charm and history which makes it special.”
Since taking over the hotel, the Davies’ have seen an increase in guests from across Britain and overseas, and the hotel has become especially popular with locals who come to enjoy the top quality food prepared by head chef Wayne Pearson, a ‘Master Chef of Great Britain’.
The location of Mill End lends itself well to exploring Dartmoor and the wider Devon area, which is currently seeing a surge in interest as the result of the release of Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. The film is based on the novel by Devon author Michael Morpurgo, and much of it was filmed on Dartmoor – with Mill End providing a base for production crews during filming.
Guests at Mill End can experience a range of country pursuits including walking, cycling and horse riding on the moors and nearby falconry and golf facilities. The hotel is also within easy reach of the National Trust property Castle Drogo and local towns Moretonhampstead, Newton Abbot and cathedral city Exeter.
