Local creative arts and theatre company Stiltskin visited the school to help 100 children make their lanterns ready for the annual parade, which is taking place on Thursday 1 December.
The workshop was organised by Plymouth City Centre Company, who also paid for another 100 children at Mount Street primary school to take part in a workshop earlier in the week.
Clint Jones, Plymouth City Centre Manager said: “The Christmas Carnival lantern parade is one of the highlights of the festive season in Plymouth, and we want to encourage as many local children as possible to take part, which is why we arranged these workshops. Stiltskin have helped the primary school students make some really fun and creative lanterns, which I look forward to seeing in the parade on Thursday.”
Plymouth City Centre Company has worked with Stiltskin since 2008 to provide lantern making workshops ahead of the Christmas Carnival, visiting different local primary schools each year.
Jacqueline Ball from Stiltskin said: “Lantern making is a fun and creative activity for children, as it gets them thinking about design, problem solving and co-ordination – and it also requires quite a lot of patience! The students at Goosewell Primary School really enjoyed the day, and we end up with some fantastic looking lanterns, ready to light up the streets of Plymouth City Centre.“
Anita Yates, teacher at Goosewell Primary School added: “The children loved the hands-on activity and threw themselves into the task with relish. It was a great event to be part of and huge fun for everyone!”
The Plymouth Christmas Carnival takes place on Thursday 1 December, with entertainment in the city centre from 4pm – 8pm including the Radio Plymouth entertainment stage featuring X Factor finalist Sophie Habibis, street performances, Santa and his reindeer and the lantern parade.
