The Sioux Warrior series has been created by Final Frontier employee Sam Gardner Jr with friends Lee O’Connor and Jake Rowlinson for Cape Fear Comics.
The first issue was launched at the Bristol Comic Expo in May this year, and proved to be so popular that it was decided to turn it into a series.
The series offers much more than your average comic – the first issue has a built in speaker and musical recording, along with an audio CD and rotating circular images which tell a different story depending on how you turn them and the second in the series comes in the form of a utility belt, complete with cape and cut out mask.
Leading comic book reviewer Rich Johnston of website Bleeding Cool has already described the Sioux Warrior series as ‘rather remarkable’, and an example of how physical print comics can rival digital versions in pushing boundaries and trying new things.
Sam Gardner Jr said: “The first in our series of concept comics started out as a program for a musical stage show I was working on (and still am) for the Plymouth area. I thought it would be cool to have a comic that actually sung to the reader like one of those musical greetings cards.
“It was only going to be a short prequel story, but as people heard what we were up to, it just got bigger and bigger. Based on the success of issue one, we then decided to release a second issue which would become a costume that readers could use in later issues which depend heavily on audience participation. We had no idea it would catch on in the way it has.”
Final Frontier is the South West’s leading comic and graphic novel store, based at 132 Cornwall Street, Plymouth. As well as selling a range of comics, toys and collectables, the shop is known for holding exclusive events and product launches, attracting comic book fans from across the region.
Clint Jones, Plymouth City Centre Manager added: “Final Frontier has developed a reputation as the best comic book and graphic novel shop in the South West and we’re very proud to have them here in Plymouth. Sam’s new series is incredibly innovative and creative and it’s great to see talent being grown in the city, especially being a comic fan myself!”
