On Tuesday 8 November the auction, which was organised by Plymouth City Centre Company, was held at the Art Frame Gallery, Cornwall Street, and welcomed members of the public to bid for 45 photographs from the ‘Sparksy’s Plymouth’ collection.
Under the direction of guest auctioneer Natalie Cornah £1,009 was raised through the bidding, which when added to donations made during the exhibition of the photos in Plymouth City Centre comes to a grand total of £1,368.
The money will go towards BBC Radio Devon’s target of £600,000, to fund a new Air Ambulance for the county.
Gordon Sparks said: “I took up photography a few years ago, just as a hobby, but it quickly became a passion, and it’s a great way for me to show people my view of Plymouth. I can’t believe that the public would pay so much for my amateur photos, but it’s absolutely fantastic to be able to help with the fundraising for the Air Ambulance Appeal. I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along and bid on the photographs, as well as everyone who helped organise the evening and the exhibition of my photos earlier in the year.”
The ‘Sparksy’s Plymouth’ collection, which was first exhibited in a pop-up gallery in the City Centre in September, reflects his view of the city through his lens, and aims to show Plymouth at its best.
Clint Jones, Plymouth City Centre Manager added: “Sparksy’s photos proved to be extremely popular when we exhibited them in the pop-up gallery on the Piazza this summer, so we thought it would be a great idea to auction them off for charity. It was a very enjoyable evening, everyone was very generous in their bidding, and I’m delighted that we were able to raise so much money for the BBC Radio Devon Air Ambulance Appeal.”
