Summer screenings continue with Royal Ballet performance

09/07/2012

Plymouth’s exciting summer screenings season continues with the third Royal Opera House production of the year beamed live to the BBC Big Screen.

On Monday 16 July, The Royal Ballet’s Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 will be performed at Covent Garden and screened live on the Piazza.

Inspired by three paintings by the Renaissance master Titian, seven choreographers have worked together to create a single evening of exciting dance, with new scores from British composers and stage designs from leading contemporary artists.

The screening offers audiences in Plymouth the chance to enjoy a world-class ballet production for free, including exclusive backstage footage and live audience interaction.

This will be the third Royal Opera House performance of the year, following the screenings of La Bohème and Falstaff in May. The summer screenings season has also included live coverage of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and Wimbledon 2012, and will continue with full coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games, starting with the opening ceremony on Friday 27 July.

Clint Jones, Plymouth City Centre Manager said: “The BP summer screenings are a great way for opera lovers to introduce friends and family to the Royal Opera House and to world-class opera and ballet – all completely free, right here in the heart of Plymouth. The screenings are always extremely popular, so I hope to see lots of people down on the Piazza, enjoying another fantastic cultural event in the build up to London 2012.”

Plymouth is one of just 24 cities in the UK to team up with the Royal Opera House and the BBC for the free live screenings as a part of the BP Summer Big Screens season.

Deborah Bull, Creative Director of the Royal Opera House added: “These summer big screens, now in their 25th year, are a highlight of our performing season.   They offer world class performance – for free – and a unique window on our world, through live presentation from behind the scenes, specially created films, cast interviews and more. We’re delighted this year to be part of the UK’s biggest ever celebration of UK culture, the London 2012 Festival. The free BP Summer Big Screens are the perfect way in for newcomers to opera and ballet – and an absolute treat for anyone who enjoys music and dance.”

Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 is part of the London 2012 Festival; the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad and the UK’s biggest ever nationwide festival of dance, music, theatre and the visual arts.

Plymouth will also be hosting its own contribution to the London 2012 Festival with World At Your Feet, a festival of dance taking place in the city centre, on the Barbican and at Royal William Yard from Wednesday 11 to Sunday 29 July.

Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 will be shown live on the Big Screen from 7.30pm on Monday 16 July.
