In addition to this, National Play Day in West Hoe Park provides plenty of activities to keep the young ones entertained during the day while the Theatre Royal provides the perfect evening entertainment with the hit musical Hairspray.
Now in the busy summer holiday period, the Plymouth Summer Festival provides plenty to see and do across the city for young and old alike, with a packed programme of events many of which are free to attend and enjoy.
03-14 August:
Hairspray at Plymouth’s Theatre Royal tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart as she sets out to follow her extraordinary dreams, inspire her mum and win the boy she loves.
Starring Brian Conley as you've never seen him before and Les Dennis as the loveable Wilbur Turnblad, Hairspray is the musical with everything - the ultimate feel-good show which has played to sold out houses in London, on Broadway and theatres around the globe.
04 August:
National Play Day takes over West Hoe Park with loads of free children’s activities including climbing walls, face painting, water play, scrapstore workshops, play rangers, bouncy castles, mobile skate ramps and information stands.
Playday events provide an opportunity for children, families and whole communities to celebrate children’s right to play, and make a massive difference to community spirit at the same time.
10-11 August:
The 14th British Firework Championships will take place in Plymouth on Tuesday and Wednesday 10th & 11th August 2010.
Once again, six of the best UK firework display companies will compete in the hope of becoming the British Firework Champions for 2010.
The best place to view the displays is from Plymouth Hoe where a fairground, catering units and live music will also be available from 6pm.
13-15 August:
A major part of the Plymouth Summer Festival, Flavour Fest takes place from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 August 2010 in the city centre Piazza and is a highlight of the south west’s food and drink calendar.
Running from the Big Screen to Place de Brest, Flavour Fest 2010 will have more than 100 food stalls packed with tasty offerings from fine food producers all across the south west.
There is a packed line-up of celebrity chefs and local restaurateurs giving demonstrations on the Chefs’ Stage and lots for little cooks too in the ‘Kids in the Kitchen’ marquee.
