Andy Burroughs has 25 years’ experience in a variety of sales, marketing and operational roles in a range of large and small organisations in both the public and private sector.
His background includes 10 years with Microsoft in the UK and overseas in strategic and commercial roles, and for five years he ran his own business management and marketing consultancy. Most recently he was director of business development at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, and was a non-executive director at Peterborough Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Andy’s role, which has been newly created, is to develop a range of services to support the growth and development of businesses at TSP and beyond. His appointment reflects TSP’s role as a founding partner in GAIN (the Growth, Acceleration and Investment Network).
GAIN was set up by Plymouth University, Plymouth City Council and TSP to accelerate growth and investment in high quality businesses and ideas to create wealth and jobs in the region.
Andy said: “My job is to develop new services to ensure TSP businesses have the support they need to thrive, and to grow those services across the GAIN network and the wider business community.
“We’re looking at mentoring, investment and coaching support, business planning, legal, finance, human resources – all those things that small businesses can find difficult to cover themselves. We’ll be working with other providers to avoid duplication and the goal is to accelerate growth and investment.
“I’ve been impressed by the diversity of businesses on the park and the potential that exists to tap into much wider opportunities through GAIN.”
Andy’s appointment has coincided with the recruitment of three new non-executive directors who joined the TSP board in April and who between them bring a huge range of experience and expertise.
Simon Chamberlain, chairman of Tamar Science Park, which is jointly owned by Plymouth City Council and Plymouth University, said: “TSP is already an engine of growth and job creation in Plymouth and we want to build on that success for the benefit of the city and the region.
“Andy is already working with our new non-execs on a range of services that will add value to TSP clients and the GAIN network. Our focus is on giving businesses the services that they need, while helping them to transform innovative ideas into commercial propositions that attract further investment and create wealth and jobs.”
New services being developed by TSP will include: a GAIN core network of mentors, investors, network leads and business advisors; investor panels to attract potential investors to the region; an investor readiness service to ensure businesses and people with ideas can present a compelling business case to investors; a business development fund; packaged commercial services such as legal, HR, accounts and ICT.
