Big screen back in Newquay – new cinema opening date revealed!

04/05/2011

For the first time in 16 years, Newquay has a new cinema – the state-of-the-art four-screen Lighthouse Cinema will officially open to the public on Friday 6 May, it has been announced today.

The ribbon will be cut on WTW Cinemas’ building on Crantock Street at 5.00pm with involvement from the town’s Mayor Councillor Andy Hannan and Newquay Town Centre Manager Guy Thomas.

The first films that will be shown from the opening will include ‘Thor’ (3D), ‘Something Borrowed’, ‘Water for Elephants’, ‘Fast and Furious 5’, ‘Rio’ (3D), ‘Hop’, ‘The King’s Speech’ and ‘Arthur’.

Before the ‘official’ opening, there will be a community open day tomorrow (Thursday 5 May), between 10am and 6pm for members of the public to tour the building for the first time, have a look at the cinema, enjoy a coffee and watch trailers for upcoming films.

All tickets for films showing at the new Lighthouse Cinema in Newquay go on sale to the public from Thursday 5 May. Customers will be able to book on-line at www.wtwcinemas.co.uk for all performances on the opening day and for future movies. The cinema box office will also sell tickets to the public during its open day.

The Lighthouse Cinema, which will seat 650 people, will be the first cinema to open in Newquay for more than 16 years. It is the first purpose-built all-digital projection cinema in the South West and will have two 3D screens.

David Williams, Managing Director of WTW Cinemas, which also owns and operates cinemas in Truro, Wadebridge and St Austell, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to be able to open Newquay’s brand new cinema in time for the summer. There has been much anticipation ahead of this moment and everyone involved in this project is very excited that the town will have a modern and comfortable venue that it can be proud of. If local people would like to come along and be a part of the opening, they will be most welcome.”

Stephen Gilbert MP for Newquay and St Austell added “I have no doubt that the new cinema will be a real hit from the day it is opened, and that’s why I’ve always been a keen supporter of its development. I congratulate the team at WTW Cinemas, and David Williams in particular, for all the hard work and dedication that has gone into this project.”

Guy Thomas, Newquay Town Centre Manager commented: “The development of the cinema in Newquay is a wonderful and positive addition to the town centre and to the facilities that the town has, not only for tourism but for the local audience too. The fact that the facility is one of the best in the South West adds to the assertion that Newquay is the experiential capital of the county.”

On Tuesday 17 May there will be an opening gala screening for invited guests with the first showing in the West Country  of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides’. More details will be revealed shortly.

Family-run business WTW Cinemas owns and operates cinemas The Plaza in Truro, White River Cinema in St Austell and The Regal in Wadebridge. White River Cinema recently won the RAAM ‘Best Independent Cinema in the UK’ award.

The new cinema in Newquay is the second phase of the company’s development plan, which included the construction and opening of St Austell’s White River Cinema in December 2008. The third stage will be the refit of the existing Plaza cinema in Truro in 2012.
