New cinema name and jobs revealed

09/02/2011

The name of Newquay’s new state-of-the-art cinema and number of jobs being created has been revealed to the public for the first time today (Wednesday 9 February 2011).

WTW Cinemas is pleased to announce that the four-screen complex, due to open in late spring, will officially be called ‘Lighthouse Cinema, Newquay’ and generate 25 new jobs in the town.

The first purpose-built fully-digital cinema in the South West has been given its name because of the panoramic view from the top projection level of the building across Newquay Bay to Trevose Lighthouse.

Lighthouse Cinema, Newquay will seat more than 650 people when it is completed and will feature MasterImage 3D projection in two screens.

Commenting on the name announcement, Mark Williams from WTW Cinemas said: “With the external appearance of the building, we felt that Lighthouse Cinema represented a good name for Newquay. It’s a modern and contemporary one for a state-of-the-art building and we’ve tried to move away from more traditional cinema names that have been used before, both in the town and across Cornwall. The new cinema is a really important part of the changing nature of Newquay and will bring a family-friendly facility which we very much hope will be a shining light in the area.”

Meanwhile, it has been announced that 25 brand new jobs are being created with the opening of Lighthouse Cinema, Newquay.

WTW Cinemas is now open to applications for a range of full and part-time vacancies including assistant managers, technical assistants, floor staff, ushers and cleaning operatives.

On the new jobs, Mark Williams added: “Over the next few weeks we will be filling the role of General Manager and then undertaking a rigorous recruitment process, including interviews, for the remaining positions that need to be filled by the time that the cinema opens to the public. We are delighted to be creating employment opportunities in Newquay through this project, particularly during a difficult time of recession and job cuts across the county.”

All positions will be advertised in the Cornish Guardian and Newquay Voice today (Wednesday 9 February). Full details of how to apply can be found at www.wtwcinemas.co.uk

Family-run business WTW Cinemas owns and operates cinemas The Plaza in Truro, White River Cinema in St Austell and The Regal in Wadebridge. The new cinema in Newquay is the second phase of the company’s development plan, which included the construction and opening of St Austell’s White River Cinema in December 2008. The third stage will be the refit of the existing Plaza cinema in Truro in 2012.
