Advice for Devonport residents on staying warm and saving money

21/01/2009

Devonport pensioners and other residents can find out how to keep their homes warm at the same time as saving energy and cutting bills at a special Energy Advice Surgery being held at the Welcome Hall, Devonport on Saturday (January 24) from 10 am to 12noon.

The free event is being hosted by Plymouth Sutton MP Linda Gilroy and will include money saving presentations, practical workshops and independent advice from leading environmental and home energy charity Westcountry Energy Action.

The surgery has been designed to help local residents reduce energy usage while still staying warm with simple but effective measures and will include workshops on making your own draught excluders and radiator reflector panels. There will also be advice on how to check you’re on the best energy tariff, dealing with fuel debts, how to read and understand energy bills and available grants.

The Citizens Advice Bureau and Devonport ward councillors will also be on hand to answer questions and concerns about energy costs and free energy saving light bulbs will be available to help participants make immediate savings.

Linda Gilroy said: “This is the first time we have tried a themed advice surgery, and I am delighted at the support we have had from both the Citizens Advice Bureau and Westcountry Energy Action. The event will give good practical advice to hard working families and pensioners challenged to make ends meet”

Westcountry Energy Action is a Plymouth-based not for profit charitable business which works with local public, private, and voluntary sectors to tackle fuel poverty as well as the impact on the environment by helping people use energy more efficiently.

Rachel Silcock, chair of trustees for Westcountry Energy Action said: "Keeping warm during winter and at the same time coping with high energy prices are important issues for many people in Plymouth.

"There are a number of practical things people can do at home to save energy and keep warm and we will be offering independent advice on these and how people can access a range of Government-supported schemes to improve the insulation and energy efficiency of their homes."
