Tilly, who is studying media and film production, recently came to DCA for video production work experience. Interested to learn more about videography and social media marketing she partnered up with different members of the team throughout as part of her time here. Tilly has written the below blog on her experience and what she has learnt.
Joining the DCA team
Back in December when I first picked my work experience, I decided to join DCA. When emailing them via their website I then got a prompt reply saying that I could join them for a week in July. I am currently studying media and film production at college and I am very interested in videography and social media. Therefore, DCA were an ideal choice for my work experience.
I found that often in my college course editing and advertising were my most enjoyed parts of the course. This meant that DCA seemed the perfect place for me to undertake my work experience.
I started off the week by joining on the first day at 9:00 am where I was greeted by the lovely team at DCA. They helped me to feel welcome and explained to me all the different aspects of media. They also ran through what they had planned for me to do throughout the week.
My week of work experience
Video production
I began my first day by joining the team’s group meeting to discuss clients and their plans for the week. They also made sure that I understood thoroughly what exactly the company consisted of.
Firstly, I worked with the Creative Director who introduced me to a new project that he had been working on. This was to create a short 3-minute video campaign highlighting three different companies. This gave me something to work on independently throughout the week.
My main project was the campaign video. I got to edit interviews, adjust audio and dialogue, lighting and colours and add b-roll footage to the final edit. Throughout this process a member of the team was always on standby to help me if needed. This reassured me in completing my work comfortably, helping me to enhance my knowledge of videography and editing.
Social media and copywriting
I was able to experience lots of different areas and roles that each of the DCA team had. Giving me chance to work with each of the team members individually. I was taught different aspects of what they do.
For example, I worked with the Social Media Manager on my own smaller project. Creating a content plan for the following month ahead. This included what posts to release each week, the type of content to include when replying to comments and how to manage different social media platforms.
Another day of work experience consisted of working with the Senior Copywriter on blog content and how to write for SEO. This also involved what goes into releasing different pieces of content and how to promote DCA.
My overall experience at DCA
My week at DCA has enabled me to expand my knowledge in many different sectors of media. This included areas I am familiar with but has also given me chance to learn new skills. I can most certainly take these on as I continue my education. This can then help lead me into my future career, such as video production, social media, or copywriting. During my time here, I have also seen all the hard work that goes into the company.
Overall, my work experience with DCA has helped me to gain skills that I will most definitely be taking on as I continue in the media industry. Even when being nervous to join, the team have been amazing in guiding me through the new things that I have learnt and have made me feel welcomed and comfortable when joining DCA.
